Welcome and thanks for being at Brainstorm: Tech 2008. I’m confident that as a group we’re going to
create a memorable experience.
The Brainstorm conference series, whose roots go back to 2001 in Aspen, has always been a collective
conversation created by all the attendees. We rely on your intelligence and initiative to make it as good as
it can be. And given the quality of the group we have assembled, I have no doubts that your ideas will be
superb. Please speak up and speak out.
We are here to jointly refine our understanding of where technology and the world are headed. We see
those two things as interlinked, and one of our big aims is to explicitly identify the connections. Tech alters
how we communicate, how we govern ourselves, how we work, and how we think. So what world are we
headed toward, so deeply mediated by technology? How can we insure it becomes the best world possible?
As individuals and as leaders, what is our responsibility?
We take such matters seriously here at Brainstorm: Tech. We believe that by firmly grounding all our
conversations about technology, the Internet, and the tech industry in a global socio-cultural context, our
insights will be deeper and our conference will be unique. The most exciting insights are always those that
result from making new connections between things we formerly thought unrelated.
You will find biographies for participants, speakers, and the FORTUNE edit team as well as information
