LINTON WELLS II

Force Transformation Chair, National Defense University (NDU)
Linton Wells II is the director of the Center for Technology and National Security Policy at NDU. He also is a
distinguished research professor and serves as NDU’s transformation chair. Before coming to NDU, he served
in the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) from 1991 to 2007; his last role was principal deputy assistant
secretary of defense (networks and information integration). He also was the acting assistant secretary and
DoD chief information officer for some two years. His other OSD positions included principal deputy assistant
secretary of defense (command, control, communications, and intelligence-C3I) and deputy under secretary
of defense (policy support). In 26 years of naval service, Dr. Wells served in a variety of surface ships and
acquired a wide range of experience in operations analysis and foreign affairs. Recently he has focused on
STAR-TIDES, a research project investigating sustainable support to populations under stress and public-private
interoperability. Dr. Wells is the co-author of Japanese Cruisers of the Pacific War (1997).
TIM WESTERGREN
Founder and Chief Strategy Officer, Pandora
Tim Westergren created Pandora, the Internet radio giant, in 2000, and now serves as the company’s chief
strategy officer. More than 50 million people have registered to listen to Pandora on their computers, phones, and
consumer electronic devices. Their personalized radio stations make up more than half of all online radio listening.
Mr. Westergren also serves Pandora as the company’s chief evangelist, traveling the country to meet with listeners
and incorporate their feedback and thoughts into making Pandora more in-tune with its fast-growing audience. A
lifelong musician, Mr. Westergren received his BA degree from Stanford University, where he studied music theory
and composition, but spent most of his time at the Center for Research in Musical Acoustics, a campus think tank
focused on the integration of computers and music. His passion for helping talented emerging artists culminated
with his decision to found the Music Genome Project, which harnesses the power of musicology and technology
to connect talented artists with listeners most likely to enjoy their music.
JIM WIAT T
Consultant, CIW Consulting, LLC
Jim Wiatt served as chairman and CEO of the William Morris Agency ( WMA) from 1999 until 2009. There he
oversaw all areas of the entertainment company, including digital, commercial endorsements, sports marketing,
business development, investments, and corporate consulting. During his tenure, he initiated innovative deals,
including the “Mailroom Fund,” a partnership with Accel Partners, Venrock Associates, and AT&T to fund digital
entertainment startups. He also helped create You Tube Gold, a new web company, to create professional content.
Additionally, he was advisor for such deals as the sale of entertainment company Reveille to Shine. Mr. Wiatt
was also the architect of the merger between WMA and Endeavor Agency forming William Morris Endeavor
Entertainment ( WME) in 2009. Before joining WMA, Mr. Wiatt was co-chairman and co-CEO of International
Creative Management, where he served for 22 years. Mr. Wiatt started CIW Consulting in 2009. A director of AOL,
he also is the offline consultant for You Tube and serves as advisor to several private companies.
HAL WOLF
Senior Vice President and COO, The Permanente Federation, LLC
Hal Wolf is the senior vice president and COO at the Permanente Federation, the national umbrella organization
for the regional Permanente Medical Groups, which comprise the physician component of Kaiser Permanente.
Mr. Wolf is responsible for the development and implementation of the Federation’s strategic priorities and is
the key liaison between Kaiser Permanente Information Technology and the Federation for the development
of technical strategies. He also works with international health systems in end-to-end process evaluations, IT
data design, and care delivery application enhancement. Before joining the Federation, Mr. Wolf served as vice
president of medical group operations and health plan regional information officer at Kaiser Permanente of
Colorado. Previously, he served as chief information officer at Qwest Communications/USWest, and in business
management positions with Time Warner Communications and MTV Networks.
